Post War
After the war
the camps at Fryermayne, Woodlands and West Knighton were used to house
civilian families. Some worked hard to make them into comfortable homes
with flower and vegetable gardens. Some families lived there for several
years, until they were found alternative and more permanent accommodation
by the local authority. Some of the huts were used for farm purposes,
for which one or two still remain.
By and large, however, they have now all but disappeared,
although some foundations still remain as a reminder of that eventful
period in time. The War Memorial in Main Street, close to the church,
bears the names of three men of the parish who gave their lives during
the Second World War.

No. 66 FH Broadmayne Camp. After the War there was a severe shortage
of housing and as late as 1953 people were living in old military accommodation.
This Nissen hut was one of many in the area of Rectory Road and Rectory
Close .(This photo was provided by Mrs Pullen who lived here with her
family in the late 1940s).
