Population

The 1991 Census shows some 22% of the population under the age of 18, 56% in the age range 18 to retirement and 22% retired. These figures are not markedly different from the National averages. This tends to contradict the perception that Broadmayne is a haven for the retired.

Statistics show that Broadmayne is a village highly dependent on the car, with almost twice the national average of households running more than one car. This reflects the necessity to travel outside the village for entertainment, shopping and employment, with 70% of those in full-time employment requiring daily travel to Dorchester, Poole, Weymouth and other locations in the area –working mainly within the service industries, including banks and finance, health care, defence, technology, education and public services.

The 1991 Census information shows the following pattern of occupational activities:

Professional, Managerial and Technical 40%

Skilled Manual and Non-Manual 43%
