The
Village Described
As can be seen
from the stylised plan (click HERE) showing the
layout of the village, Broadmayne is a ‘cross-roads’ village, although
it has a linear ‘feel’ as the main axis is along the busy A352 that
runs roughly in a north-west to south-east direction from the county
town of Dorchester towards Wareham. The A352 is a busy road which inflicts
heavy and fast traffic upon the village, despite its 30 mph speed limit
through the village. Nevertheless the village does manage to retain
much of its life and character.
The main road,
Main Street, is bisected at the cross roads in the centre of the village
by a minor road which in many ways is perhaps the more vital axis of
the village for its inhabitants – the concentration of dwellings being
in the south-west along Chalky Road and in the north-east along Knighton
Lane, which joins Broadmayne to the neighbouring village of West Knighton.
The two villages are effectively linked for many purposes, for pre-school
and school facilities, and are within the same group of parishes for
church purposes.
