Broadmayne
Methodist Sisterhood
I would have liked to have mentioned when
the Sisterhood actually started, but we do not seem to have
any records available. The nearest time we can give is sometime
between 1920 and 1930. Cyril Durrant remembers going along
with his mother before he started school.
The aim of the Sisterhood is to encourage
and help women to fulfil their Christian responsibilities
in every aspect of life, in the home, church and community.
We are also an ecumenical fellowship. We have a membership
of fourteen which now includes gentlemen and are very happy
to include some residents from Lytchetts Residential Home
in our number. Although we always include a short devotional
time in our meetings every week, we try to have a more formal
devotional meeting once a month. Our speakers cover a vast
range of subjects from ‘sugarcraft’ to ‘speaking in tongues’.
We also have members’ afternoons when everyone takes part.
In November, we hold a bazaar when we make donations to church
funds, to the MacMillan Nurses and to the Royal National Lifeboat
Institution. Our December meetings include a concert for the
NCH Action for Children and also a Christmas Service. We always
leave time each week to have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee.
Sometimes during the year, we join with other Women’s Meetings
in the Dorchester and Weymouth areas to celebrate their anniversaries.
We occasionally go out to lunch together and also have an
‘outing’, usually in May. This year, we enhanced our skills
when we made banners to decorate the schoolroom – they depict
the four seasons of the year. Our fervent hope is that, over
the years, we will get some young people into the church who
will be interested in joining Sisterhood so that it can continue
to develop as a Christian Fellowship.
